Every October, people all over the world show their support for people affected by breast cancer.
The work of Breast Cancer Now, the research and care charity, is always important, but October is the month when the spotlight really is on them.
During the coronavirus pandemic, many areas of breast cancer research was put on pause, and due to that, now more than ever, people, communities and businesses across the UK should consider helping breast cancer research and care.
From campaigning, volunteering and fundraising, to the life-changing care, support and research they provide, the advances made into the subject are all down to the donations made throughout the year.
According to the charity, at least 1 in 4 breast cancers could be prevented, but first, they need to know who is most at risk of breast cancer and what can be done to prevent the development of the disease.
They are also running one of the world’s largest studies into breast cancer in men to uncover the genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that increase breast cancer risk in men.
Their current aim is to ensure that by 2050 everyone diagnosed with breast cancer will live. One of the ways in which they are achieving this is to find better ways to detect and diagnose breast cancer as early as possible. The earlier it’s detected the higher the chance of treating it successfully.
The researchers are also looking for new treatments that can be better tailored to each type of breast cancer. They are trying to understand why breast cancer spreads to other parts of the body where it becomes incurable and what can be done to stop it or treat it more effectively.
